Authorâs Note
I have a soft spot for this story, because it lets me play with my academic research interests: fantasy, medievalism, and romance! Thereâs a lot of folklore sprinkled in here, primarily Eastern European, borrowing from legends about fairies and wolves and enchantment; thereâs a nod to some medieval history, and some Roman history, with Julianâs name. As usual, Brewerâs Dictionary of Phrase and Fable is a fantastic treasure-trove of folkloric trivia, and Katharine Mary Briggsâ work on fairies and folklore is an excellent starting-point for exploring more.
The iele in particular are Romanian forest-spirits mainly known for playing haunting music and seducing humans, particularly handsome young men. (Theyâre more traditionally female, but, for story purposes, Iâve played with that!) Theyâre not inherently malicious, but they might accidentally keep you for a hundred years, or you might dance yourself into exhaustion or insanity to the sound of their music.
Iele, by the way, simply means They, or They Themselves, in sort of the same way Celtic fairies are sometimes just called the Fair Folkâknowing and using the true name of anything magical is tricky, as you might inadvertently summon that fairy, though you might also have a certain amount of power over it.
This is, of course, important.
The title and opening epigraph come from Robert Gravesâ âCherry-Time,â from 1918, which contains an impressively seductive description of enchantment, fruit, and a âjuice of pure delight,â which transforms those who taste it into fairies.
Finally, some songs on my playlist for this one:
Ludo, âStreetlightsâ
Smashing Pumpkins, âLunaâ
The music of Guillaume de Machaut from the 14th Century
Tegan and Sara, âFalling Asleepâ
Pixies, âGiganticâ
